We had a wonderful time this year at Sandy Creek Nature Center's "Snake Day!" Now I know there are plenty of you out there who think snakes are disgusting creatures. But we don't feel that way at all! Snakes have many purposes on this planet, and we like them! We aren't fond of the very few species that are harmful to us, but there are so many non-venomous snakes out there that play key roles in our local environment. First on the agenda was getting my face painted with a snake on it!
I also made a cool craft project that was snake-oriented.
Mama was watching me complete my project while Daddy was busy taking pictures.
And now for the fun part! Here's the first snake I was able to touch.
And then a beautifully-colored one! Mama really liked this one a lot.
Now this guy couldn't be allowed out of his enclosure. He's a "monitor" lizard that is very similar to a Komodo Dragon.
Oh no! There's a gator in Athens! But this gator was invited and was a nice little guy. His skin felt so different from that of a snake.
This was a very friendly snake. He seemed to love my Mommy.
For those of you who have never touched a snake, they are NOT slimy at all. Their skin is very smooth, cool and dry. And they love the warmth of the human body.
I was also able to touch a baby snake. So cute!
The wildlife people also brought an owl so we could learn more about them. Look at those eyes!
And we finished up inside the nature center looking at their exhibits.
What a fun time we had at snake day. It was nice to learn more about these beautiful creatures and the vital role they play in our ecosystem.
